Hidden Children

Three of our survivors were “hidden children” during the war: the sisters Anne Levy and Lila Millen in the Warsaw ghetto, and Jeannine Burk in the home of a Christian woman in Brussels, Belgium. With her Jewish appearance, Anne Levy remained a “hidden child” on the “Aryan side” of Warsaw after her family escaped the ghetto. Lila “passed” as a Catholic child. She was a “hidden child” in the open. In every Nazi-occupied country there was the danger of someone betraying Jews to the Germans. Warsaw was particularly dangerous in this regard.
